Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC), a division of Sony Europe B.V., proudly sponsored Pride Cymru again this year. On Saturday, June 22nd, the team at the Pencoed facility joined the vibrant parade through the Cardiff city centre, showcasing their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Clad in t-shirts with the Sony Pride logo, the UK TEC team made a statement of solidarity and celebration. The back of the t-shirts also paid tribute to a significant milestone: the 50th anniversary of Sony in Wales and the 30th anniversary of Sony in Pencoed.

This gold and pearl theme has been a central motif in many of the team’s events this year and will continue to be celebrated throughout the remainder of 2024.

Respecting employees with diverse backgrounds and perspectives is fundamental to the Sony ethos, stimulating innovation and driving the creation of social value. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) are encoded in the DNA of Sony UK TEC, shaping a vibrant corporate culture. During Pride Month, its team members shared personal stories and reflections on what Pride means to them.

Natalie Jones, Marketing & Communications Officer: “Coming out was a journey that took me until the age of 26… For a long time, I grappled with the fear of what people might think. Social pressures and expectations made it difficult to embrace my true self and I was constantly worried about the potential for rejection and misunderstanding from those around me. However, as time passed, I realised that living inauthentically was not sustainable. The courage to come out grew from a desire to live openly and honestly. When I finally did come out, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. The journey wasn’t easy, but it was incredibly rewarding.

“One of the most significant aspects of my journey has been finding a workplace where I can be my authentic self. At Sony, I have found that place. It’s not just about tolerance; it’s about being embraced for who you are. Working for a company that values diversity and inclusion has made all the difference. For me, Pride is about celebrating authenticity and the freedom to be who we truly are.”

Samantha Byrne, Digital Transformation Service & Application Support Manager: “Participating in and supporting Pride Cymru means standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Advocating for equal rights and embracing the richness that diverse identities bring to society. Pride as a whole is an opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to a world where everyone can live authentically and free from prejudice.”

Richard Wilkins, General Manager of Sustainability & Compliance: “To me, Pride and sustainability go hand in hand. Pride is about embracing and celebrating our diverse identities. It’s about ensuring everyone feels valued and respected, no matter who they are or who they love. As an ally, I believe in the importance of supporting the LGBTQ+ community and creating an inclusive environment for all. Sustainability is about building a world that supports and includes everyone.”

Amy-Jayne Martinson, Human Resources Advisor: “With deep admiration for Pride Month, I believe that celebrating diversity and fostering inclusion should be part of our daily lives. As a dedicated ally to the LGBTQ+ community and the proud sister of a gay brother, I am passionate about celebrating love, friendship, and the unique abilities of all individuals. My brother faced severe discrimination and hate from his peers at work, but thankfully, his employer took corrective action. Experiences like these have strengthened my resolve to be a strong ally and to ensure everyone feels valued and included.

“This commitment is one of the main reasons I serve as an Inclusivity Champion here at UK TEC. I am a strong believer that being one’s true, authentic self positively impacts mental wellness. Considering that half of LGBTIQ+ people experience depression, three in five experience anxiety, and one in eight aged 18 to 24 have attempted to end their life, it is more important than ever to prioritise mental wellbeing. There is ample help and support available for everyone, and we must all do our part to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all. (Statistics: www.mentalhealth.org.uk).”

UK TEC’s participation in Pride Cymru is a testament to their ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace where every individual feels valued and respected. By celebrating diversity, they continue to grow as a team of individuals with one shared goal: to fill the world with emotion.

As the celebrations of Pride Month come to a close, Sony UK Technology Centre looks forward to further events and initiatives that honour its legacy and continue to build a future where everyone can thrive.
